Early Support for Children. Lasting Change for Families.

Functional Family Therapy–Early Intervention (FFT‑Ei) is an evidence‑informed, family‑centered mental health intervention designed for children ages 6 to 10 and their caregivers. Built on the proven Functional Family Therapy (FFT) model, FFT‑Ei intervenes early, strengthening family relationships, supporting emotional regulation, and addressing behavioral concerns before they escalate.

Why Early Intervention Matters

Early childhood is a critical period for social, emotional, and cognitive development. Emotional and behavioral challenges that go unaddressed during this stage can persist and intensify over time. Yet many children with identified mental health needs never receive treatment due to limited access to developmentally appropriate services.

FFT‑Ei was created to close this gap by providing structured, high‑quality mental health support that meets children and families early, voluntarily, and with a focus on long‑term well‑being.

Key Components of FFT-Ei

FFT‑Ei is an adaptation of Functional Family Therapy, a gold‑standard family therapy model with decades of successful implementation. FFT‑Ei is specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of younger children and their families.

Key adaptations include:

FFT-Ei is designed around early childhood developmental milestones and brain development in 6-10-year-olds. By focusing on this critical period of social, emotional, and cognitive development, FFT-Ei provides structured support early, before emotional and behavioral challenges persist or intensify over time.

FFT-Ei includes attachment-focused interventions and works with the entire family system, along with a focus on family interaction patterns unique to early childhood. The model focuses on strengthening parenting skills, improving communication, and supporting caregivers in responding effectively to their child’s emotional and behavioral needs.

FFT-Ei incorporates sensory processing and emotional regulation strategies. These strategies support enhanced emotional regulation in children and help families build stronger, more positive relationships.

Key Features of FFT-Ei

Our early intervention program is designed to provide structured, family-centered mental health support for young children and caregivers, with early pilot results showing reductions in overall risk factors for children, improved parenting skills and family communication, enhanced emotional regulation in children, and stronger, more positive family relationships. FFT-Ei is:

reduce-01
Preventative

FFT‑Ei is designed as a preventative intervention, helping families address concerns early and reducing the likelihood of later involvement with child welfare, juvenile justice, or more intensive mental health services. Referrals are typically voluntary and driven by mental health needs rather than court mandates.

Family-Centered

Young children do not experience behavioral or mental health challenges in isolation. FFT-Ei works with the entire family system to strengthen parenting skills, improve communication, and support caregivers in responding effectively to their child’s needs.

Sustainable

FFT‑Ei is supported by FFT LLC’s established implementation infrastructure, including a secure web‑based Client Service System (CSS) used for documentation, assessment, progress monitoring, and fidelity oversight. Ongoing consultation and supervision support consistent, high‑quality implementation.
